The ride
Jameson Canyon, I-80 and the Yolo Causeway get you through Sacramento and up the hill to Auburn without much fuss. From there CA-49 drops toward the American River and climbs out to Cool, and Georgetown Road takes you past Greenwood into El Dorado County.
Wentworth Springs Road is the meat of this one. It runs east from Georgetown country past Balderson Station and Quintette, deep into the Eldorado National Forest, and keeps climbing toward Uncle Tom's Cabin, the old stage stop the ride's named after. The route tops out around 6,093 ft up there. Then you swing down Ice House Road past Jones Place and White Hall, a long, flowing descent through the forest to Riverton on Highway 50.
Highway 50 takes you down past Pollock Pines, Placerville, Shingle Springs and Folsom into Sacramento, and then instead of the freeway home you get the quiet finish: I-5 south to the Delta, Victory Highway through Walnut Grove and along the river, then CA-12 past Rio Vista and Fairfield and back through Jameson Canyon. Figure about 323 mi and ~9,200 ft of climbing, a full day. Top off in Georgetown: there's nothing out Wentworth Springs and Ice House until Highway 50, about 60 mi. The upper Wentworth Springs and Ice House roads are high country and can be closed or snowed in outside summer and fall, so check conditions first.
