Gualala

314 mi · 9,900 ft of climbing · high point 2,087 ft · start/finish downtown Napa (First St & Main St)

The ride

North out of Napa up Highway 29 through Yountville, St. Helena and Calistoga, the whole length of the valley. Highway 128 carries you over into Sonoma County and Alexander Valley Road takes you past Jimtown to Geyserville, then it's up 101 to Cloverdale.

From Cloverdale you swing over to Dry Creek and pick up Stewarts Point–Skaggs Springs Road, the back way to the coast. It's tight, twisty and empty, climbing over the coastal hills (the route's 2,087 ft high point is out here) before it spits you out onto Highway 1 at the Sea Ranch. A short run north crosses into Mendocino County at Gualala, and then you turn around and get the whole Sonoma Coast heading south: Stewarts Point, Fort Ross, the Russian River mouth at Jenner, Bodega Bay, and on into Marin along Tomales Bay past Marshall to Point Reyes Station.

From Point Reyes Station there's a detour out Sir Francis Drake Boulevard past Inverness onto the Point Reyes peninsula and back, then Highway 1 south through the Olema Valley to Five Brooks and up and over on Fairfax–Bolinas Road. San Rafael, Highway 37 past Novato, Arnold Drive and the Carneros Highway bring you home. It's about 314 mi and ~9,900 ft of climbing, so it's a full day. Fuel up in Cloverdale or Healdsburg: Skaggs Springs Road has no services until you hit the coast, roughly 40 mi. The coast can be a lot cooler than the valley, so bring a layer.
