The ride
Up the Napa Valley on Highway 29 through Rutherford and on to 128, over into Sonoma County and up 101 through Geyserville and Cloverdale. At Cloverdale, Highway 128 heads into Mendocino County and through the Anderson Valley, past Philo and down through the redwoods along the Navarro River to the coast.
From the coast it's Highway 1 north through Little River and Fort Bragg and on to Westport, then Usal Road, a rough backcountry road along the edge of the Lost Coast, and back to Highway 1 over to Leggett. From Leggett you head north on 101 into Humboldt County through Garberville and Miranda, and onto the Avenue of the Giants at Phillipsville, the old highway through the tallest redwoods anywhere, up toward Dyerville and the confluence of the Eel River forks.
Home is 101 south: Cummings, Willits, Ukiah and Cloverdale, then 128 and the Napa Valley back down through Oakville. About 440 mi with ~11,400 ft of climbing, a very long full day. Fuel up in Fort Bragg: from there through Westport and Usal to Leggett is a long, empty stretch, and then Garberville is the next real town. Usal Road is unpaved and changes a lot with the season, so check conditions and be realistic about your bike and tires before you commit.
