The ride
Out of town the pretty way, up the Silverado Trail to Calistoga, then Highway 128 over into Sonoma County past Jimtown to Geyserville and 101.
From there it's 101 north, mile after mile: Cloverdale, Hopland country, Calpella, Willits, Laytonville and Cummings, then through Leggett, where the redwoods really start, and on into Humboldt County. The Avenue of the Giants is the reason you came, the old highway that runs alongside 101 through Humboldt Redwoods State Park, slow and quiet under some of the tallest trees on earth, with the Eel River close by.
Home is the same way back, 101 south to Geyserville, 128 to Calistoga and the Silverado Trail down the valley. About 393 mi with ~8,300 ft of climbing and a 1,952 ft high point, a long full day but not a hard one. Fuel up in Willits or Laytonville: north of Laytonville the towns thin out a lot until Garberville. The Avenue is narrow and slow, with trailheads and cars parked on the side, so take your time there.
