The ride
A shorter one, close to home. Down through American Canyon, across CA-37 past Sears Point and up the Lakeville Highway into Petaluma, then out D Street and Red Hill Road into the rolling dairy country of west Marin.
Point Reyes–Petaluma Road brings you to Point Reyes Station, and then Highway 1 heads south through Olema and down the Olema Valley past Five Brooks and along Bolinas Lagoon to Stinson Beach. Turn around and you get the same stretch of Highway 1 going the other way, then you head north along the east shore of Tomales Bay to Marshall.
Marshall–Petaluma Road climbs up from the bay and over the hills, one of the best back roads in Marin, then Hicks Valley and Red Hill take you back to Petaluma. Stage Gulch Road, Arnold Drive and Fremont Drive through Schellville and the Carneros Highway get you home. It's about 155 mi with only ~3,300 ft of climbing and a 784 ft high point, an easy day or a long afternoon. Fuel is never far away, but Point Reyes Station is the last easy stop before the coast. Highway 1 along Bolinas Lagoon and Marshall–Petaluma Road are narrow and get slides and roadwork, so check conditions.
