The ride

Out through American Canyon and across CA-37 to the Lakeville Highway, then 101 north through Petaluma, Santa Rosa, Healdsburg and Geyserville to Cloverdale. That's the warm-up. At Cloverdale you turn onto Highway 128 and head into Mendocino County.

Mountain View Road is where it starts getting good: a long, twisty, mostly empty road from Boonville over the hills to the coast at Manchester. From there Highway 1 runs north along the bluffs through Elk, past Fort Bragg and up through Westport, where the coast gets wilder and emptier. Then the route takes Usal Road, a rough backcountry road on the edge of the Lost Coast, and comes back out to Highway 1 and over to Leggett and the redwoods.

From Leggett it's 101 south through Laytonville, Willits and Ukiah, then Alexander Valley Road and Highway 128 down to Calistoga and the Napa Valley home. About 393 mi and ~11,400 ft of climbing, so it's a full day, and an early start helps. Fuel up in Fort Bragg: Westport has little, and from there through Usal to Leggett is a long stretch with nothing. Usal Road is unpaved and changes a lot with the season and with storm damage, so check conditions and be honest about your bike and tires before you commit.
