The ride
I-80 gets you through Fairfield, Vacaville, Davis and Sacramento to the foothills, then CA-49 drops toward the American River and climbs out to Cool, and Georgetown Road takes you to Georgetown.
From Georgetown, Wentworth Springs Road heads east past Balderson Station and Quintette and keeps going, climbing into the high granite country of the Eldorado National Forest toward Loon Lake. The route turns onto the forest road that ties over to Ice House Road and hits its high point at about 6,539 ft. Ice House Road is the descent, long and flowing past Jones Place, down to Highway 50 at Riverton.
Highway 50 home through Placerville, Folsom and Sacramento, then I-80 through Davis and Fairfield and back over Jameson Canyon. About 342 mi with ~11,300 ft of climbing, a full day. Top off in Georgetown: from there until Highway 50 it's about 70 mi of forest road with no towns. The upper Wentworth Springs, Loon Lake and Ice House roads are snowed in for a good part of the year, so check conditions with the Eldorado National Forest.
